Miss New York Mallory Hagan Named Miss America 2013

Brooklyn was certainly in the house at the Miss American competition.

Miss New York, Mallory Hagan, was named the winner of Miss America 2013.
The 23-year-old, who lives in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, won the swimsuit competition on last night’s show and also performed a tap-dance to James Brown’s “Get Up Offa That Thing.”

Both of those things are even harder to do than they sound.

Hagan beat out contestants from 49 other states, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands to win a $50,000 college scholarship and the right to wear the crown for one year.

Hagan answered a timely question about guns during the show, saying that she didn’t think the proper way to fight violence was with more violence, and that gun safety classes and longer waiting periods to purchases guns were better solutions.

Hagan, who has roots in Alabama, is the first New York representative to win Miss America since actress-singer Vanessa Williams, who won in 1984.
